Apple Wallet setup
What you need for Apple Wallet passes on Shakewell Wallet: who holds the signing certificate, what Apple requires, and how passes reach an iPhone.
Last updated 2026-11-05
Shakewell signs and renews Apple Wallet passes for you, so you do not generate certificates, build .pkpass files or run an update server.
What Shakewell handles
- Pass Type ID certificates, kept in encrypted secret storage with restricted access.
- Signing each pass and renewing certificates before they expire.
- Delivering updates to installed passes.
What Apple requires of you
Apple requires an Apple Developer account to issue commercial passes. The cost is paid to Apple and applies on any wallet platform; see the pricing FAQ. We help with it during onboarding.
How a pass reaches the phone
- You create the pass (API or signup form). The response includes
install_urls.universal. - On an iPhone the link offers Add to Apple Wallet.
- Once added,
is_installedbecomes true and updates and push messages reach the device.
If a pass will not add, see the troubleshooting section. To inspect a .pkpass file yourself, use the free pkpass validator, which runs entirely in your browser.
